Chris Hemsworth reveals that his first meeting with the Guardians of the Galaxy in Anthony and Joe Russo’s Avengers: Infinity War will be set up in Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok. The upcoming third installment in Thor’s solo trilogy takes the character (and the story) in a different direction. With the character’s homeworld being threatened yet again by outside forces, the God of Thunder must first battle his co-worker, Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and then ally himself with some seemingly unscrupulous characters - such as his brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and the former Asgardian warrior Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) - in order to protect Asgard from the impending Ragnarok at the hands of Hela (Cate Blanchett), the goddess of death.
At some point in that story, Thor may find himself in a situation that leads into next year’s Infinity War. The Infinity War footage that was screened to attendees at both the D23 Expo 2017 last weekend and San Diego Comic-Con 2017 this weekend opened with an unconscious and wounded Thor floating through space and, eventually, colliding with the Guardians of the Galaxy’s ship, the Milano. After Rocket first jokes about using the windshield wipers to knock him off the window, the Guardians bring the Asgardian hero aboard their ship, and that’s when he gains consciousness and says, “Who the hell are you guys?”
Shortly after showcasing the footage for Comic-Con attendees, Hemsworth and the rest of the Infinity War cast and crew took part in press interviews backstage. In an interview with IGN, the actor revealed that the events that lead up to him colliding with the Milano in space will be revealed in his upcoming solo film, Thor: Ragnarok.
Since Ragnarok is the second of the final two movies that lead into Infinity War - the other being Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther, starring Chadwick Boseman as the eponymous character - fans have known for some time now that it will lead directly into the events of the Russos’ upcoming team-up movie. In fact, Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige recently said as much while promoting Jon Watts’ Spider-Man: Homecoming.
“It is. I think so, yeah. I think you’ll have to watch our film first to understand what Avengers is about.”
While most people may have assumed that Feige was referring to Thor - or someone in the film - discovering the final Infinity Stone (the Soul Stone) that has eluded the MCU denizens, which Hemsworth recently stated will be revealed soon, it now seems like the movie will lead into next year’s Avengers film in more ways than one, with Thor somehow finding himself possibly floating through space, which eventually leads up to him meeting with the Guardians. Perhaps that’s how the Guardians end up joining the fold? We’ll just have to wait and find out how that highly anticipated encounter plays out.
